Instagram Releases tvOS App

Hartley Charlton reported for MacRumors over the weekend Instagram has released an app for tvOS.

“Instagram is now available on the Apple TV, bringing Reels, longer videos, and live shows via the platform to Apple’s streaming device for the first time,” Charlton wrote on Saturday. “The Instagram app for ‌Apple TV‌ lets users watch content from their favorite creators, discover videos, and resume watching across devices. Instagram describes the app as a way to watch together with friends and family, extending its video experience to the television.”

I downloaded the app to my Apple TV 4K as soon as I saw Charlton’s story, and I like the app very much. Not only can I view my own posts on a big screen—my beloved 77” LG C3 OLED from 2023—I can view the aforementioned Reels and more as well. From an accessibility standpoint, the benefit here should be obvious: visually, it’s much easier to see pictures and the like on a large TV than on my comparatively tiny phone screen. I admittedly spend a lot of time watching Reels on my phone, which is primarily how I engage with Instagram, but I’m keeping the tvOS app as a secondary conduit of sorts. It’s well done, and as I said, provides a more visually accessible experience for me.

As Charlton notes, Instagram came to TVs last December on Fire TV before branching out to Google TV this past March.
